Questions, ideas and anything that broke go in Ask Popchat, the official help club. The team reads every message.

Questions people ask

What is Popchat?

Clubs for the things you're into and the places you live, plus pops: small games, tools and pages anyone can make by describing them. Join clubs, chat, plan events, and make things together.

How do I start a poll?

In a club's chat, tap the poll button next to the message box (or + → Poll, or Start a poll in the club's ⋯ menu). Write the question and two or more choices, pick Show who voted or Anonymous, and post it. Everyone sees the bars fill in live: tap a choice to vote, or tap it again to take the vote back. A Board post can carry a poll too (the Poll button when you write it). One-to-one messages don't have polls.

How do events and RSVPs work?

Tap + next to the message box → Event, or Plan an event from the club's ⋯ menu or its Events tab. Give it a day, a time and a place. Everyone can say Going or Maybe with one tap, and the event shows how many are going and who. Going or Maybe reminds you an hour before. The club's host can add events and put you down for one when you ask it.

What's "Coming? 👍"?

A quick headcount without making an event: open a message's menu and tap Ask who's coming. A Coming? 👍 button shows under that message, and the count with names updates live as people tap it.

How do I get people into my club?

Invite people (in the club's ⋯ menu or the Invite button) makes a link you send from your own phone or mail. Owners and admins also have Add people: pick people you know, search by name or @handle, or Add by phone, which texts a one-time invite link that works for a week. Print a poster from Club settings: it has the club's icon, its name and a big QR code; people scan it, type their name and phone number, and they're in.

What are clubs and channels?

A club is a group around an interest or a place. Inside, channels split the talk ("cool-cars", "general"). Type ~name to link a channel; # is for tags, which find posts across Popchat. A club also has tabs: Chat, Board (longer posts), Events, Calendar, Market, Media and Files.

How do I make a pop?

Tap Create, say what you want ("a tide clock for Galveston", "bingo for game day"), and Popchat builds it, plays it and fixes what breaks. You can change it later by describing the change. Idea chips under the box help when you're stuck.

Who's the host in my club?

Each club has a host: a character played by Popchat, always shown with a small npc badge next to its name. It answers when you talk to it (say its name or @ it), welcomes new people, finds news and events for the club, adds events, and remembers what you tell it about yourself. See and delete what it remembers from the club's ⋯ menu; mute it from one of its messages' menu.

How does the calendar work?

Calendar (in the main menu) shows every event you're going to or might go to, from all your clubs, as a list, a month or a week. A club's Calendar tab shows just that club's. "Add to my phone's calendar" subscribes your phone's calendar to the same list, so it stays up to date.

How do Chats and messages work?

Chats lists your clubs, groups and one-to-one messages, newest first. The filters at the top show All, DMs, Groups or Unread. Message someone from their profile or from a club's member list. In a conversation's ⋯ menu, Mark as unread puts its dot back so you come back to it. Settings → Messages has typing, read receipts, message requests and strong language.

Why are some words covered, like f••k?

Popchat covers common swear words for whoever is reading, the way TV bleeps them. Nobody's message is changed, only what you see. Tap the small ⓘ next to a covered word, or open Settings → Messages → Strong language, to pick: bleep all swearing, allow mild words (damn, hell, crap) and bleep the strong ones (the default), or don't bleep. You can also fold messages with very strong language behind a Show message button, and choose which country's words count, since a word that is mild in one place can be rude in another. Private messages, one to one and groups, are never covered. On a child's account swearing is always covered and the setting isn't shown.

How do I change my picture, name or theme?

Settings → Profiles: tap a profile to change its photo (your avatar), name, header photo and colours. Each profile has its own. Settings → Theme picks the look (Afterglow, Afterglow Lite, Punch and more) and light, dark or the same as your device.

What's local?

Popchat knows roughly where you are (your area, never your exact spot) and shows the local room, events and people nearby. You choose your areas in Settings → Local & places.

What do the plans include?

Free has everything to start, with a few premium builds and drawings. Paid plans have more builds, more drawings, more chats and pictures in pops, extra profiles and more. See Pricing for the details.

What's the gold coin? (power-ups)

When you've used up something for now (builds, drawings, chats in pops), its button shows a small gold coin. Tap it to power up with a pack, move up a plan, or see when it refills.

Is my stuff private?

Private clubs and messages are only for the people in them. Prompts you write to make pops stay yours. You can download or delete your data in Settings → Account, and see what Popchat learned about your interests in Settings → Interests.

Something's broken or confusing

Ask in Ask Popchat: the people building Popchat read it. A screenshot and what you expected to happen make it fastest to fix. Security problems: tell us privately, not in the club.
