Cold, snowy winters and mild summers define the Western U.P. The best time to be out is summer for the lakes and trails, or winter for snowmobiling. Spring is muddy, fall is crisp. Best: Summer (June–August) is ideal for hiking, fishing, and lakes; winter (January–February) is prime for snowmobiling and skiing.
